Drexel’s Saphead Studios Brings “PhillyBall” To Local Sports Bars, Inspired By The Biggest Matches Of The Summer

As Philadelphia prepares to host matches for the global tournament in 2026, international eyes are fixed on the pitch. Seizing this historic cultural moment, a talented team of student-entrepreneurs from Drexel University’s Entrepreneurial Game Studio (EGS) is stepping up to showcase the city’s creative and technical grit. Saphead Studios LLC, an indie studio born within Westphal College of Media Arts & Design, is channeling the city’s electric atmosphere into their latest release: PhillyBall, a high-energy, multiplayer soccer party game that serves as a digital love letter to Philadelphia.

The team isn’t restricting their innovation to standard app stores; they are taking it directly to the streets. In a unique multidisciplinary effort supported by Westphal Program Director Rob Lloyd, the studio has collaborated with Product Design senior Max Gruber ’26 and Music Industry senior Dylan Ugel ’26 to refurbish vintage arcade cabinets. These custom-built hardware units feature a completely unique physical setup and an original score, and they will be installed across local sports bars and fan zones for casual fans to enjoy throughout the tournament.

This ambitious project highlights Drexel’s powerhouse role as a university-wide incubator for innovation. From classroom concepts to real-world deployment, Saphead Studios is proving that Drexel’s internal resources are vital to the city’s creative tech ecosystem. While these arcade cabinets are set to be a highlight of the 2026 festivities, they are built for longevity, eventually transitioning into a permanent “Drexel Tron” installation inside Westphal College to inspire the next generation of creators.
