Meet Evan Ehlers, an alumnus of the Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship, and founder of Sharing Excess. Since starting his non-profit in 2018, Ehlers has grown the operation from Drexel University to a regional powerhouse. Evan started his entrepreneurial journey by collecting extra meal swipes from the dining halls on campus to donate to those in need. Today Ehlers and his team of volunteers have saved and shared over 13 million pounds of food for people in need. That’s over $24 million dollars of food that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. By saving this food from being wasted in landfills, Sharing Excess has stopped just over 47 million pounds of carbon from finding its way back into the earth.
Ehlers knew there was a disconnect in the food waste and sharing network, and after his first time saving and donating food with his extra meal swipes, he knew he was onto something. After being accepted into the entrepreneurship co-op at the Charles D. Close School of Entrepreneurship, Ehlers got started on growing his non-profit. Since he left Drexel, he’s grown Sharing Excess from a startup to a nationally recognized leader in food redistribution. Through hard work, Ehlers has been added to Forbes 30 Under 30 list for social impact.
